DIRK BADENHORST RAD's International Advisor for Africa.

We are delighted to announce Dirk Badenhorst's appointment as International Advisor for Africa. He will be visiting London to attend a RAD Board of Trustees meeting in June 2009.

Dirk is a well known and highly admired South African Personality. He started his professional ballet career with CAPAB Ballet Company and also danced with the Performing Arts Company of Transvaal (PACT) Ballet Company. Following his time with the classical ballet companies, he danced and toured with Danza Lorca Spanish Dance Company and the Jos and Helena Montoya Spanish Dance Company.

After the closure of the State Theatre and its performing entities, he was instrumental in establishing the first truly independent professional ballet company in South Africa. During his tenure with the South African Ballet Theatre (SABT), he negotiated sustainable sponsorships and various international collaborations for the company.

Dirk travels extensively, locally and internationally, to ensure that he stays in touch with the latest developments in the world of dance and to initiate exchange programmes. In the process he established himself as an internationally recognised role-player.

He is the CEO/Artistic Director for the Cape Town International Ballet Competition which he initiated and during its inaugural year drew some of the top dancers and judges from all over the world. He currently directs the only full-time Ballet and Dance Academy in South Africa and directs Mzansi Productions, a professional dance company.

Dirk has a passion for youth development and outreach programmes and initiated and directs the Roodepoort Youth Ballet and also established in outreach programmes for young dancers in disadvantaged communities in Pretoria and Alexandra.

Apart from his involvement in ballet, he worked as Senior Programme Director for Common Purpose Leadership Development Programmes and managed his own Movement Therapy practice providing services to, among other, the Unica School Autistic Children, Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital and the New Hope School for the Mentally Physical Handicapped. He currently lectures Dance and Movement Therapy as a subject for the University of Pretoria's Masters Degree in Music Therapy.

Dirk replaces Carmen Whyte who has recently come to the end of her three year term as International Advisor.
