Awwady
(Pronounced uh WAHD dee)
This refers to the Arabic free-form improvised instrumental solo that has no underlying rhythm. Often used for the opening few phrases of music played for a belly dancer, and it is then followed by the fast- or medium-tempo entrance music.

Beledi
(Pronounced BELL uh dee)
An Arabic word meaning "my country", "my village" or "my home town"

Debke
(Pronounced "DEB kee)
Folk dance native to Lebanon involving intricate footwork and squats, dancing done to folkloric music. The upper body is held in a proud, upright posture with minimal movement.

Habibi
(Pronounced " hah BEE bee)
Arabic word meaning "my darling" or "beloved" Habibi appears in many Arabic song titles and lyrics.

Jawaahir
(Pronounced "Ja-WA-heer)
Means jewels in Arabic

Paillette
(Pronounced " Pie-ette)
Large flat sequin or disk with a hole on the top.

Qanun
Plucked box zither with 63-84 strings. Played flat.

Rakkas
Arabic word meaning "the male dancer"

Shimmy
Rapid repeated movement - especially of the hips or shoulders.

Veil
Cloth used in middle eastern dance. The veil is very popular in middle eastern dance.

Zills /Zils
Finger cymbals in Turkish. Called sagat in Arabic. However, it is normal for the Turkish term to be used.
