The highly anticipated annual showcase Dance Spectrum takes to the Mandela stage at the Joburg Theatre from 8-12 March during Festival of Fame.

The promising dancers from SA’s leading school of specialization in performing and creative arts, The National School of the Arts, will dance in the spotlight in a variety of works spanning the spectrum of dance.

“We compile a programme that has both variety and relevance, and is accessible to an inter-generational audience," said Manuel Norambuena, the Head of Dance at the National School of the Arts, “Dance Spectrum offers a dynamic and diverse line-up and will entertain audiences of all ages,” he said.

The highly anticipated 2017 Dance Spectrum opens with a captivating suite from “The Sleeping Beauty” danced to the magnificent Tchaikovsky score. The work affords demanding solo, duet and corps de ballet opportunities for the young dancers. The selection includes the Fairy Variations, the Grande Pas de Deux and the Garland Waltz. First performed in 1890, "Sleeping Beauty" owns a special place in the classical ballet repertoire. “The ballet highlights the dancers’ technical skills and also allows their performance artistry and interpretative abilities to shine,” concluded Norambuena.

Acclaimed Spanish dancer and NSA teacher, Gillian Bonegio, has choreographed a new work aptly named, “The Journey of Life” based on two poems by the Spanish poet and playwright, Frederico Garcia Lorca – Monologue of the Moon from Blood Wedding and Casida of the Branches. The dancers perform to the evocative live guitar accompaniment of Raul Bonegio.

The expressive contemporary work on the programme casts a critical perspective on some of the realities of 21st century living. Jayde Swart’s "HEPTA – FRAZZA" looks at how society compels us to keep up with its demands in a relentless, unforgiving and totally debilitating way. The HEPTA in the title refers to “7” degrees of stress (FRAZZA).

Guest choreographer Phume Sikhakhane examines societal dysfunction in "Era of the Haters". He depicts a fear-driven world in which subversive and vindictive behaviour systematically brings down the capable and the good; delivering a disconnected alienated society devoid of empathy and compassion; feeding off negativity and appropriating all that is positive and good.

Completing the 2017 Dance Spectrum line-up are various works from emerging student choreographers including the highly anticipated matric piece. After 4 years of disciplined learning, dedication and commitment, the class of 2017 will dance confidently in the spotlight demonstrating the high level of vocational training that they have received during their time at the country’s leading art school.

Dance Spectrum is directed by Manuel Norambuena with lighting by Nic Michaletos, the beautiful costumes have been skilfully crafted by Cassandra Parsons. Dance Spectrum is on at The Mandela at Joburg Theatre from 8-12 March.

Dance Spectrum shares the bill with the music department's "Star-Struck – A Disney Dream" on Wednesday 8 and for the gala opening on Friday 10 March. Dance Spectrum can be seen as a stand-alone production on Saturday 11 at 11:30 and Sunday 12 at 12:00.
