SA World Championship Dance Team Clean Up at the Medals Table

MEDIA RELEASE: 18th December 2014

South Africa has proven its power again this December at the International Dance Organisation (IDO) World Dance Championships in Poland with the SA team earning a formidable 21 medals at the renowned international competition. The SA team of 40 battled it out against the finest dancers and athletes from 22 countries from across the globe in a clash that left the competition podium and the Polish city of Mikolajki echo with the sounds of Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika.

After an incredible amount of hard work, dedication and impeccable performance over 5 days of gruelling competition, SA leaped into pole position and dominated the medals table, winning the highest number of medals in the Adult and Junior sections.

Tsebang Sipambo, Micaela Todd and Chane Labuscagne from the Junior division and Hope Maimane and Bradley Peter from the Adult division worked tirelessly to impress the judges, winning 12 individual gold medals between them. Robin Versveld (adult division), won 2 golds, 2 silver and 1 bronze. Proving their skill in the athletic performances created by acclaimed choreographers Mitja Popovski (Slovenia) and SAs own Wendy Quarmby, these dancing heroes flexed their muscles on the world stage, placing SA on top of the World Championships ranking. Wendy won 5 out of the 8 gold medals. These awards were in modern, jazz and ballet.

Pretoria-based team coach, choreographer and commander-in-chief, Wendy Quarmby, headed this committed team of 40 dancers. Commenting on this success, Ms Quarmby said, Our team of world class dancers are a force to be reckoned with in the international arena of competitive dance and athleticism. The blood, sweat and tears that went into making this truly powerful and integrated team, proudly left Poland with high emotions and excitement, eager to share their incredible achievements with South Africans back home.

This accomplished team of SA dancers is crossing borders and breaking boundaries, proudly flying the SA flag high above the world and cementing SAs place in the international arena of competitive dance.
