Mike Thobejane, Headmaster of H. A. Jack School writes:

I met Jane Pick of the Jane Pick School of Ballet during the 2009 St Marys School prize giving ceremony. Jane asked if she could introduce dance as an outreach programme to the children of H. A. Jack School. The school is situated in Highlands North but it comprises learners from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. Learners come from Alexandra, Soweto, Inner City and Ivory Park.

She introduced dance for the first time to our 648 learners and parents. After two weeks of relentless effort by Jane, she came to my office and indicated that it is difficult to teach hungry learners. She advised that she would like to start a feeding scheme for the learners and is currently feeding 100 learners out of her own pocket. She has invested both her time and money into our school.

Her responsibility is not limited to teaching dance to our learners. She arrives at 6am every morning to feed the children and clean our school environment. With the help of her husband, Clive, they have tiled our foyer and the hall.

Jane is a selfless person, an asset to our country, a mother, a sister and most significantly a ballet teacher of substance. She is known and loved by our staff, parents and learners.

H. A. Jack ballet pupils do their first Royal Academy of Dance examinations. These young dancers have been trained by Jane Pick, Michelle Emslie and assisted by Bronwyn Craddock who has spent hours helping and demonstrating to these young dancers.
